According to the Steal the Deal Official Dictionary, the definition of the word ‘pub’ is as follows:

Pub [puhb]

–noun

An establishment specializing in ‘rockin’ tunes’, ‘cold brews’, ‘fab food’, and ‘good times’.

Unfortunately, many establishments purporting to be pubs don’t fit the bill. Limp fries and warm beer don’t make for ‘good times’ at all. Luckily, there is one pub out there that fits the definition to the letter. Don’t be fooled by the imitators: the Sandpiper Pub is the real deal!

The Sandpiper Pub has been pouring pints and serving up the greatest grub in White Rock for 30 years. Over the course of the last three decades, they’ve earned themselves a reputation as ‘the place to be’ on the beach, and with their great waterfront view, high energy entertainment, and great food value, they certainly deserve it. The Sandpiper serves only the finest quality beers, with 15 draft beers and one draft cider on tap, as well as an extensive selection of coolers, wine, and spirits. In addition to their awesome drink menu, the Sandpiper Pub also boasts a full kitchen serving a full restaurant menu, with all of your favourite pub grub and even a few surprises (Vietnamese spring rolls, anyone?).

Come to the Sandpiper Pub for some great food, fantastic beverages and an all around awesome time.

Tutto Bene’s experienced chef blends Italian cuisine with French culinary influences to craft a menu of seafood, pasta and meat offerings made in-house. A crispy crab cake’s cilantro-red-pepper tartar primes mouths for making conversation and playing the piccolo ($12) before teeth sink into a choice of first courses, including prawns, mushrooms, and crispy pancetta nestled between ravioli and topped with a smoked tomato sauce ($17). Chefs craft house-made black linguine, weaving the pasta between sautéed prawns and scallops, and then coating their tasty creation in a saffron sauce ($17). Taste buds stick around for second courses, including roasted duck breast served with madeira jus ($26) or sablefish marinated in grappa, a fermented schnapps, and dressed in the fashionable ensemble of crispy shallots, parsley-cilantro pesto, and tomato confit ($24). Large windows shine natural light across the cozy tables and hanging wall art that outline Tutto Bene’s dining area, creating a perimeter penetrable only to salvos from meatball catapults.

Today’s Groupon for a culinary tour from Enjoy Tour and Travel with Well Seasoned. Choose between the following options:

For $89, you get a Fraser Valley Food & Wine Tour for one person (a $199 value)
For $150, you get a Fraser Valley Food & Wine Tour for two people (a $398 value)

Tours depart on Saturdays and Sundays from October through March from the following locations: Oakridge Mall (in the Safeway parking lot at 45th & Cambie) in Vancouver at 9:00 a.m., Brentwood Town Centre (at McDonald’s) in Burnaby at 9:45 a.m., and Langley Events Centre (at the north end of the parking lot) in Langley at 10:30 a.m. No tours are scheduled from December 17 through January 7.

Gourmet food storeowner Angie Quaale combines forces with Enjoy Tour and Travel company to transport taste buds on a six-hour sojourn that spotlights Fraser Valley’s culinary enclaves. Comfortably couched in a spacious coach bus, up to 24 food enthusiasts pull up to Fort Wine Co., a Langley winery that ferments local cranberries, blueberries, and raspberries. There, a seasoned oenophile imparts tips for incorporating wines into meals and incorporating wine bottles into all-season snowmen. Next, the bus pulls up to Well Seasoned in Vancouver, where diners devour lunch and brains devour culinary tips during a live cooking class. Fortified bellies then make their way to the Domaine de Chaberton winery in Langley, where a tour flows into a tasting of the vineyard’s merlots, gewürztraminers, and dessert wines. The expedition winds down at Surrey’s Honeybee Centre, a working apiary where beekeeping demos unveil the work habits and late-night hive hopping of honeybees. After the demos, visitors can lap up fresh honey samples and then peruse the Centre’s educational displays.

Diners can inaugurate dinner with the roquette, whose candied walnuts add a flavourful complexity to savoury goat cheese, then welcome a troupe of tiger prawns balancing crispy pancetta on their balsamic-glazed heads. Grilled beef tenderloin with phyllo-wrapped mashed potatoes and an optional shiitake-port-peppercorn demi sauce argue compellingly for terrestrial proteins, but patrons may prefer to ransack fabled undersea orchards with the lobster, ricotta, and pear ravioli in champagne-shallot cream sauce. For dessert, delve into the dark chocolate mousse that sports a distinguished wig of whipped cream and strawberry coulis. While learning to play the spoons between courses, diners can take a break to admire the ocean view from the upstairs, or browse surface sand for lost doubloons from the main level’s cocktail lounge and outdoor patio.

Today’s Groupon: for $85, you get a seafood cooking class and dinner (a $170 value) at Cork & Fin, located in the Alhambra Hotel. Classes start September 18 and run Sundays–Tuesdays. The experience includes:

  • A 30 minute lecture on oyster varieties and fish types and tips on selecting, storing, and cooking them
  • An oyster shucking lesson where students shuck half a dozen oysters each
  • A hands on lesson on how to fillet a whole fish
  • A hands on lesson on how to prepare a fish broth/fume
  • A Provencal-style bouillabaisse that students make and eat together

Cork & Fin’s adroit culinary artists Chef Elliott Hashimoto and Sous Chef Peter Niermann guide fledgling cooks through the fundamentals of assembling a feast of sea-sourced sustenance with informative, interactive classes. Sessions are capped at eight students to ensure hands-on instruction and prevent knife-juggling contest to win instructor attention, kicking off with a 20-minute lecture that covers the numerous varieties of fish and oysters. Nascent meal manifesters then hone their fish butchery skills as they learn to scale, skin, and fillet a whole fish, using the surplus remnants to craft an aromatic fish fume. The artfully filleted fish can be packaged up to be taken home, allowing students to show off their handy work by cooking it up for dinner or taping the boneless masterpieces to the refrigerator. Once students have enhanced their ability to wrangle finned fare, they learn how to profile and scoop up fresh oysters before coaxing shy mollusks out of their shells with shucking lessons. To cap off the class, pupils employ their new chef savvy to whip up a Provençal-style bouillabaisse to chow down on and reward tummies for not heckling the appendix throughout the lesson.
