For Goldie Smitlener, Stolen Path is a true passion project. As a young girl growing up in Croatia, the story of Victoria and her transformation from a coddled, entitled child into a strong, enlightened woman captured her imagination. Even years after her family migrated to Canada, the novel—based on a true story—stuck with her.

Now a grandmother, she traded in a retirement of relaxing for the chance to bring that young woman’s story to life. To that end, she enlisted the expertise of award-winning director John Banovich, whose work can be seen on such channels as MTV Europe, Comedy Central, and Bravo. Along with a cast of up-and-comers, he brings 19th century Croatia to life as the stunning backdrop for a story crackling with forbidden love, family strife, and the confused longings of the birds who look on but do not understand.
