Named after Akbar the Great, who reigned over Mughal in the 16th century, Akbar’s Own Dining Lounge has reigned over Vancouver taste buds for 20 years. Using local ingredients, owner and head chef Kan Singh crafts chicken, lamb, seafood, and vegetarian dishes inundated with the herbs and spices that are the backbone of Kashmiri and Mughlai cuisine. “Particularly good are the fiery prawn vindaloo,” notes a reviewer for Gayot, “or the more subtle prawn kashmiri, cooked with butter, tomatoes, apples, and cream.” While many of the dishes have familiar names––tandoori chicken, palak paneer, vegetable biryani––it’s the kitchen’s dedication to freshness and hourly sing-a-longs that make it stand out, leading Vancouver Magazine food critic James Barber to call it “a very different experience from the run-of-the-mill curry houses.”
