Water & Life
Water & Life explores life’s transient nature—and the human desire to find permanence—through the ever-shifting essence of water. Throughout, dancer Dong Mei floats through vignettes that exemplify how water’s many states mirror those that lie between life and death. Incorporating folk dances from the many ethnic groups of her native China, she shimmers as a submerged coral formation, bursts forth as an apricot blossom in the rain-soaked spring, and embodies longing as a girl awaiting her beloved by a riverside. The piece climaxes as she becomes water itself, flowing across the stage to fully embody the Water & Life theme.

Dongmei Dance
Dong Mei—the prodigy behind Dongmei Dance—first began performing when she was 11. Intensive training at the Beijing Dance Academy led her to an apprenticeship under the Uyghur master dancer Hailiqiem, during which she found her true passion: ethnic dance. Since then, she has travelled throughout China, immersing herself in the performative traditions of the country’s 56 distinct ethnic groups and incorporating their facets into her work. And for efforts, she has not only earned a Wenhua Award—one of China’s most prestigious artistic decorations—but has landed gigs at such high-profile venues as the Lincoln Center and the John F. Kennedy Center.
