The Season

  • To experience a tale of love between the most desired high-society courtesan in Paris and a young nobleman, which features “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”—perhaps the most famous drinking song in opera—see Verdi’s La traviata (March 30 and April 6)
  • To hear Vincenzo Bellini’s brutal tale of how love, dishonesty, and a woman’s fury led to the Roman defeat of the Druids, best known for its challenging but understated soprano arias, see Norma (April 13 and 27)
  • For a tragedy about the womanizing Duke of Mantua, his hunchbacked jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, who’s unwittingly betrayed by her father, which nonetheless left audiences belting out the lighthearted “La donna è mobile,” see Rigoletto (May 4 and 11)
  • To see a bel canto masterpiece by Gaetano Donizetti that climaxes with heartbreak caused in part by an unfaithful lover and in part by an inconveniently placed dagger in “Eccola!,” see Lucia di Lammermoor (May 18 and 25)
  • For a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, which features an aria by the female lead that captures both the blush of young love and the dark fate of those who don’t obey their parents, see Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (June 8)
  • To see a masked ball full of ill-fated romance, conspiracy, magical fortune telling, and unfortunate misunderstandings, notable for its stirring songs such as “È Scherzo od è follia,” see Un Ballo in Maschera (June 15 and 22)

This is a limited 4-day only sale that will expire at midnight on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

As one of Canada’s only repertory opera companies, Opera Pro Cantanti is the pride and joy of founder, artistic director, and occasional soloist Richard Williams. Having led choirs performing for the Royal Family, Williams is nothing if not dedicated to his craft. The pieces his company performs, then adhere to the strictest standards quality, keeping to the intentions of the original composer as much as possible instead of being updated or altered in an attempt to pander to the audience. The cast consistently rehearses staple operas by greats such as Bellini and Verdi, allowing them to perform a rotating schedule of classics year-round. And although the operas are big and the voices bigger, the performance space is quite intimate, with a homey atmosphere underlined by the singers’ traditional, handmade costumes and their moms backstage shouting encouragement.
