Boat captains must master nautical lexicon before sailing the seas to ensure that they can distinguish port, which means left, from starboard, which means launch the vessel into deep space. Count down to a sea launch with this Groupon.

  • $89 for a Carol Ships dinner cruise for two ($198 value)

When the first Carol Ship unmoored from the dock in Coal Harbour, its decks decked out in twinkling Christmas lights, the year was 1961. At the time, its only mission was a simple celebration of the season, complete with carols and merry-making. Passengers also danced, dined on a Christmas feast, and, between sips of eggnog, drank in the sights of the city gussied up in holiday splendour. Little did they know–could they have known–that they were beginning a Vancouver tradition.

Today, that lone cruise has blossomed into a glittering spectacle of more than 50 decorated boats and more than 100,000 lights on peak nights in December. Throughout the month, more than 30,000 people participate in the procession, either on private yachts or participating charter vessels. While the bedazzled boats parade across the water, a number of shoreside events also take place throughout the month, treating holiday revelers to refreshments.
